About this tool
The safe modern default
JPG, PNG or HEIC in — WebP out, roughly 25–35% smaller than the JPEG at matching quality, with transparency intact.
WebP is the format to reach for when you want a real saving without thinking about compatibility: every browser in use decodes it, it keeps an alpha channel, it encodes quickly, and it replaces both JPEG and PNG in one step. AVIF goes smaller, but WebP is faster to produce and better understood by older design software.

Smaller than JPEG, faster than AVIF
Around 25–35% under JPEG at the same quality, and encoding takes a fraction of the time AVIF needs. For most sites it is the best effort-to-saving ratio available.
One format for photos and graphics
Lossy for photographs, an alpha channel for logos and cut-outs. That is a single format where you would otherwise ship JPEG and PNG side by side.
libwebp on your machine
Google's own encoder compiled to WebAssembly, with sharp YUV conversion enabled so edges and saturated colour hold up. Your files never leave the tab.
Step by step
How to convert an image to WebP
Add your image
Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or iPhone HEIC onto the page, or press Browse files. It opens in this tab — nothing is uploaded.
Set WebP quality
The page opens on WebP. Keep the default or adjust the slider; transparency carries over from PNG and HEIC sources.
Download
Save the .webp file straight to your device. Every step is in the history, so you can undo before you save.

Questions
Questions about this tool
Everything here runs in your browser, so the answer to “where does my file go?” is always: nowhere. More in the general FAQ.
How do I convert a PNG to WebP?
Drop the PNG and this page opens with WebP selected. Press Download. Transparency is carried over automatically, so a logo or a cut-out stays cut out.
Is WebP smaller than JPEG?
Yes, typically 25–35% smaller at the same visual quality, and it also handles transparency, which JPEG cannot. The default quality here is 80, which is visually clean for photographs.
Do all browsers support WebP?
Yes. Every browser in current use has decoded WebP for years, including Safari since version 14. It is the least risky modern format to serve.
Should I use WebP or AVIF?
AVIF if the smallest possible file is the priority and a few seconds of encoding is acceptable. WebP if you want a large, safe saving quickly, or if the file will pass through older design software. Both keep transparency.
Does converting to WebP lose quality?
Lossy WebP discards some detail, controlled by the quality dial. At 80 the difference is invisible at normal viewing size. Use Measure output size to see the real file size before committing.
